Tanganyika and Zanzibar union is a mutual combination formed between Tanganyika mainland and coastal land of Zanzibar in April 26th, 1964 and hence formation of Tanzania under the founders Julius Kambarage Nyerere and Abeid Amani Karume. The union benefits both parties.

This articles highlighting the best benefits of Tanganyika and Zanzibar union, specific in economic and social aspects in the United Republic of Tanzania as a whole.

Economic benefits of Tanganyika and Zanzibar union

Economies of scale, this is due to large population and large geographic area resulted from Tanganyika and Zanzibar union. Lead to decrease in cost of production, as the quantity of production increases, the average cost per unit of production decreases.

Comparative advantage, usually individual specialize production based on comparative advantage in the activities which they can produce at low relative opportunity cost.  

Increase trade due to wide marketing area. Example Zantel services in United Republic of Tanzania as a whole, most foodstuffs consumed in Zanzibar were produced in Tanzania mainland, and people from Zanzibar doing their business in Tanzania mainland and vs. In Tanzania mainland people usually say “kanunue dukani kwa mpemba”.

Large population of skilled labors enters the employment market and hence availability of all required skills, knowledge, and information. Also the daily activities of promote economic growth of the country can be performed well if every individual decide to work hard and with consideration of required specific skills, knowledge, and information.

Literature review suggests that, union has economic benefits to members of that union. Membership of the European Union has had a big positive effect on average incomes in all but one of its member countries. That is the central findings of research by Nauro Campos, Fabrizio Coricelli, and Luigi Moretti (2014). Social benefits of Tanganyika and Zanzibar Union

This article initial highlighting social benefits as, security and peace in the United Republic of Tanzania. Improvement in solidarity among members of the union and interaction between members

Free movement of people, goods, services, and capital in all over the country, easily investment opportunity are social benefits of the Tanganyika and Zanzibar union.

Conclusion and Recommendations  

To conclude, I can say that Tanzanian still need and value the Tanganyika and Zanzibar union.

During interview with Shida Masamba,  Balozi Sefue Ally Idd says “watu wetu wafanye kazi, waweze kuajiriwa katika secta binafsi pia, badala ya kuajiri watu toka nje. Tusome, tuache uvivu, tufanye kazi. Tuzalishe sana, tujiimarishe kununua vitu vyetu badala ya kununua vya nje, na pia tuuze nje vitu vyetu. Tuhakikishe muungano wetu unaimarika na unadumu kwa maslahi yetu na kizazi kijacho”. (2016)

Presidential candidate (ADC) Hamadi Rashidi says “watanzania wanauhitaji muungano, na kwamba, umoja ni nguvu utengano ni udhaifu, mataifa yote yenye nguvu ni kwa kuwa yameungana”(2015). www.fikirapevu.com/wagombea-uraisi
